Zebra Lab focuses on sustainable architecture, reducing energy consumption by 85%
With one office in Pamplona and another in San Sebastián, the Zebra Lab architecture studio has attracted the attention of institutions, companies, and individuals because of its ability to address different fields of architecture: urban planning, the construction of new buildings, and home renovations.
In the latter case, the work they carry out mostly encompasses adapting homes to the current needs and unique realities of their clients: the expansion of day spaces and reduction of night spaces, the integration of the kitchen and living room, the optimization of small spaces, etc. An aesthetic taste for detail, consistency in their use of quality materials (prioritizing natural ones), and a commitment to efficiency and sustainability are common denominators to everything that this studio does.
To that end, two complete renovations have just been finished up in the center and in the Gros District of San Sebastián (in both cases, the work featured a predominance of open spaces dressed in natural wood), as well as a semi-detached villa with unobstructed views in the Egia District (structured around a striking concrete staircase). They also have the renovation of three old farmhouses underway: two in Berastegi and one in Hernialde.
Regarding the construction of new buildings, they are working on one single-family villa in the Ategorrieta District of San Sebastián and another in the rural area of Urnieta. Likewise, they have just handed over the keys to four two-story homes in a 600 m2 complex that they built atop a historic building in the center of San Sebastián.
They are currently constructing a 400 m2 multi-purpose building for the Olaberria City Council which will be Passivhaus certified – a building standard based on an excellent thermal envelope with thick insulation, rigorous control of drafts, maximum indoor air quality, commitment to the use of renewable energies, and the optimized use of energy for heating and cooling systems. In the Basque Country there are currently few buildings that have this certification, and Zebra Lab is firmly committed to respecting the environment through actions that are able to reduce energy consumption by around 85% when compared to conventional buildings.
