Visits to wineries are amongst the most beautiful experiences offered by the Basque Country, especially in the Rioja Alavesa, whose wines are appreciated all over the world. One of those wineries, Amaren, has two fascinating ways for you to visit them: Winemaker for a Day and Amongst Varietal Wines.
Who has never dreamed of owning their own winery and creating a unique coupage? The Winemaker for a Day tour leads the visitor to discover, cup in hand, the philosophy, personality, and most unknown places of this world-famous winery in Samaniego that produces wine in tanks made of concrete. It’s an interesting day that includes a stop in the area where special wines are produced, and the chance to design a coupage. A visit to their sixteenth-century aging cellar and a paired tasting are the icing on the cake that wrap up this exciting experience.
Amongst Varietal Wines is a journey through the very essence of the main Amaren varietals: Tempranillo, Graciano, and Garnacha. This experience allows you to discover the winery by tasting, throughout the tour, 100% single-varietal wines directly from the barrel, and to finish by trying Amaren’s Colección Exclusiva Garnacha and their Reserva 60 from old vines, aged for 22 months in new French oak barrels.
Another of the most important aspects of the tours is the vineyard: the winery has 65 hectares of vineyards of between 35 and 110 years of age. Because of their characteristics, all work in the fields is performed by hand and, in some cases, with animal-drawn equipment, following the guidelines of traditional vine growing.
Wines by Amaren are amongst the best from the Rioja Alavesa, and an immersion experience in a winery sheds light on the complexity and delicacy of the excellent work they undertake.
