One of the most unknown and unique municipalities in Navarre is Gallipienzo, a town of just 99 inhabitants located on a 600-meter-high hill. Built in the tenth century as a defensive position against the Muslims, Gallipienzo features a rich medieval historical heritage, remarkable cuisine, and a unique natural environment. Among its attractions are the bird observatory that has views of the Aragón River Gorge and the Kaparreta Nature Reserve.
To share the beauty of this privileged place with travelers, Patxi and Ramón opened an eco-chic hotel called Heredad Beragu there six years ago. The name comes from the history of Gallipienzo: “Beragu” refers to the mountain on which the municipality sits; and “heredad” is a term used in the past to refer to a complex that included a farmhouse, stables, winery, barn, and oil and grain mills. In Gallipienzo, there were up to three “heredades”, all of which now make up the lodging establishment. By joining together four houses that were side by side, Patxi and Ramón achieved 800 m2 of space which feature a living room with a fireplace, a winery, a restaurant, and nine double rooms whose names make reference to what they were historically used for –“Los Almadieros” (the rafters), “La Herbolera” (the herbalist), “Beragu,” “La Bodega” (the winery), “El Molino” (the mill), “El Hogar” (the hearth), “La Capilla” (the chapel), “La Almazara” (the oil press), and “La Fragua” (the forge).
Sustainability is one of the hallmarks that Heredad Beragu proudly defends. Construction of the hotel was carried out using 90% recovered and demolition materials: stones, beams, and columns of woods that are local to the region, lime and sand mortar, floors featuring handmade clay tiles, hydraulic tiles, Arabic tiles, old brick, and walls with lime mortar and natural dyes. They also make use of biomass and solar energy to heat the establishment’s water and to operate the heating, and they have an ecological vegetable garden and chicken coop to supply the restaurant, exclusive customer use. The best local dishes can be enjoyed on its gardened terrace, as well as a full homemade breakfast based on natural, in-season products.
Although the hotel is aimed exclusively at the adult crowd, Heredad Beragu does have a vacation home for families. This country-style duplex has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living/dining room, and magnificent views of the Kaparreta Nature Reserve: a great option to get to know Gallipienzo and the beautiful trails that pass through the municipality, such as the GR-1 Historic Trail and the Salazarese Shepherds Royal Herding Track.
