Founded in 1935, Villaflores has become a leader in the Basque Country in everything related to floral art. Over its long and prosperous history, this family company has had the chance to decorate big-name hotels such as the María Cristina, the Lasala Plaza, the Château D’Arcangues and the Château Brindos, the homes of members of high society who spend the summer in San Sebastián, and historic spaces and venues for holding events like Miramar Palace, Arteaga Castle, and Murguía Palace.
One of the main areas where this establishment works is wedding decoration –churches, town halls, restaurants, and estates–, adapting to the latest trends, couples’ tastes, and the aesthetics of each wedding –and always upholding the tenets of sensitivity, observation, creativity, functionality, the study of color, and respect for nature.
In terms of floral art and the corporate sphere, more and more companies now understand the importance of introducing natural elements into work environments, achieving not only more beautiful settings but also wellbeing among employees and customers. Villaflores has worked in the floral field with first-class leaders: the Lasala Plaza Hotel, the Regional Government of Gipuzkoa, the Kursaal Convention Center, the company Orona, Perrier-Jouët Champagne, the French jeweler Mauboussin, the San Telmo Museum, the Bokado Restaurant at the San Sebastián Aquarium, the Gipuzkoa Science and Technology Park, the financial services company Barclays, and the San Sebastián International Film Festival. In relationship with the seventh art, the flower shop was also in charge of all the floral and plant decoration for the Woody Allen film “Rifkin’s Festival,” which was shot in the Basque Country.
Some of the work undertaken for corporations is temporary in nature (decoration at a conference or a board meeting), although the number of firms opting for permanent plant and flower arrangements in different parts of the company is on the rise. In these cases, Villaflores uses plants adapted to the lighting conditions of each office which are resistant to going several days without water. There are firms that do not have a lot of space to incorporate plant life. In this scenario, the ideal thing would be a vertical garden; and if plants that do not require maintenance are sought, it is recommended that they be freeze dried (a process which replaces the sap with a glycerin solution). Villaflores has recently installed two freeze-dried murals: one at the Uvesco Group headquarters and another at Salto Systems – a company for which the flower shop has additionally created a striking four-meter-high natural tree with artificial flowers. We at BASQUE LUXURY have also chosen Villaflores for the design of the bamboo forest that breathes life into our studio’s garden. This feature of our garden demonstrates what Villaflores proclaims with such determination: that plant life improves concentration, promotes calm in the environment, encourages creative development, and helps people to feel more connected with nature.
For those interested in learning about floral art, Villaflores has a space set up to teach Ikebana classes, the Japanese art that of arranging flowers in a decorative manner in order to convey a mystical idea of perfection.
