In the beautiful fishing village of Hondarribia is Villa Magalean. Magalean comes from magal, which in Basque means lap, skirt, shelter. This villa, in Neo-Basque style, was rebuilt in 2017 by interior designer Iñaki Biurrun, who turned it into a hotel with eight rooms and suites, a restaurant, and a spa. That impeccable remodel respected the original architecture of the 1950s, such as the carved beams, the wrought iron balconies, stone finishings around windows, Andalusian-style tiles, crown moldings, friezes, parquet, and old-style flooring. The interior underwent an Art Deco redesign, introducing decorative elements from the Basque Country and Europe: Lamps by Lladró, fine fabrics of high quality selected in England and Italy, contemporary furnishings brought from the Netherlands and Belgium, porcelain from Limoges, and stained-glass windows from the French Basque Country.
