Located on the coast and featuring a privileged view of Zarautz Beach –the longest beach in Gipuzkoa, visited by surfers from all over the world thanks to its consistent waves– stands the imposing Ur Bare boutique hotel, which opened in 2023 in a protected building built in 1945. Featuring 13 rooms, a bar, a restaurant, and an outdoor area with an infinity pool, the hotel has quickly gained popularity among the most demanding of clients looking to enjoy the beauty of the Basque coast.
The warm décor of the hotel’s spacious rooms and junior suites –some with sea views and others with garden views– is topped off by beige lime plaster walls and natural stone floors, luxury Vispring beds, high-end amenities, and architectural details that do not go unnoticed.
In the hotel’s bar –called Tarín– the views of the golden-sand beach and the indigo color of the Cantabrian Sea are the absolute protagonists. It’s the perfect place to pair an informal snack with exceptional wines, cocktails, and good conversations.
For a more formal meal, Ur Bare has the Villa Aiten Etxe Restaurant, where the foundation of the cuisine is fire. Grilling is name of the game in terms of the menu, which features seasonal ingredients with local flavor: sea bream, turbot, monkfish, fine clams in green sauce, sole meunière, beef fillet with boletus and foie, and duck cooked for 12 hours with mole and corn. The starters are also from the grill: oysters with Per Sé Naccarii caviar, sea anemone from the Bay of Biscay and Codium seaweed vinaigrette with Aizarnazabal kiwi, sweet pepper with cured egg yolk and tuna belly salad, as well as the famous Erreka, consisting of a pintxo of home-smoked and marinated rainbow trout from Yesa reservoir with river plankton, marinade emulsion, and tomato ice cream. To accompany these delights, there is the establishment’s wine list made up of 200 top-notch national and international labels: Comtes Blanc de Blancs 2011, Remírez de Ganuza Reserva 2020, Castillo de Ygay Gran Reserva 1986, Jardín de las Iguales 2019, Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 2018, Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes 2020, Guigal Hermitage Blanc 2018, Henri Bourgeois la Vigne Blanche Sancerre 2021, El Puntido 2019, Sierra Cantabria Mágico, Vega Sicilia Único 2013, Teso la Monja, and Château d’Yquem 2018.
At the top of the building, there is a space reserved exclusively for guests which is the crowning jewel for the sublime experience of staying at Ur Bare: a landscaped terrace with sea views presided over by an infinity pool, with loungers for tanning and an area with tables for having a snack and a drink in privacy. Next to the terrace, a gym and a sauna round off the space dedicated to bodily wellbeing. With this range of services, it is no wonder that the hotel has become a “must” on the Basque coast.
