Imposing, brilliant, with impossible shapes and lines, guarded by a giant dog made of flowers – this is how you will look upon the Guggenheim Museum from the Terrace at the Domine, the rooftop bar with the best views of Bilbao. Located on the top floor of the Gran Hotel Domine, from this panoramic terrace you can see iconic buildings that help to make the city’s silhouette special, such as the Iberdrola tower, the University of Deusto, the La Salve Bridge and –of course– the art gallery that is the brainchild of Frank Gehry. Located in the heart of the Bilbao Arts District, its dialog with the Guggenheim is so fluid that it is no wonder that the Terrace at the Domine has become the favorite meeting place for both Bilbao residents and visitors alike to enjoy breakfast, brunch, and afternoon service.
With an extensive sweet and savory buffet, topped off with a hot à la carte dish and a variety of pastries, the breakfasts have delighted those with a sweet tooth and the healthiest alike. The yogurts, pastries, smoothies, etc. are made right in the hotel. The sourdough breads and the exquisite Ossau-Iraty cheese from the French Basque Country deserve a special mention.
Brunches are held exclusively on designated dates such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and during Bilbao’s “Semana Grande” (“Great Week”) festivities. The atmosphere is set with live music, and these brunches are quite the event in the city. The feast begins with a glass of champagne or a mimosa cocktail and continues with a culinary journey featuring an extensive buffet and dishes prepared to order with the best local products.
During afternoon service there is a relaxed, afterwork feel, yet without losing the sophisticated character that the place deserves. Additionally, there is live music on Fridays. The house-marinated wild salmon tartare with pico de gallo and crudités, the green asparagus tempura with wasabi mayonnaise, and the Black Angus burger with Idiazabal cheese, bacon, tomato, and Zalla onion confit are some of the most popular dishes on their snack menu.
Because of its location and artistic nature –it was designed by Javier Mariscal and Fernando Salas– Gran Hotel Domine has been a fundamental player in the daily life of Bilbao since its inception; and with the renewed atmosphere of the Terrace at the Domine, the establishment has reaffirmed its commitment to remain at the height of the city’s social life.
