Founded in 1989 and located in the center of Samaniego, Remírez de Ganuza makes contemporary Rioja wines that are characterized by their complexity, elegance, balance, and excellent aging potential. The winery owns eighty hectares of vineyards, distributed in over 240 plots in different municipalities in the foothills of Sierra Cantabria.
Everything at Remírez de Ganuza matters: the harvest, which is done manually in boxes weighing 12 kilos each, the meticulous selection of grapes and respect for them throughout the production processes, the hygiene measures that border on obsession, and the long aging in new barrels – mostly made of French oak. No bottle of Remírez de Ganuza is released on the market without having been kept for an extensive period in the wine cellar: only time allows the wine to develop the characteristics and style that this producer is looking for.
Remírez de Ganuza has been known since its inception for revolutionizing some of the traditional methods used in the region by introducing improvements in both the vine growing and winemaking process. One of the company’s most notable systems is the one used for separating the Tempranillo clusters into two: the shoulders, with perfect phenolic properties, are used for their Reservas and Gran Reservas, which have greater aging potential, while the tips are used for their young carbonic maceration wine, with no aging in barrel.
The winery is specialized in the production of Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, and its old vintages increase in value year after year. Bottles from its collection are rare and desired by sommeliers and wine lovers around the world. From the emblematic Gran Reserva 1994 –whose average international price increased 380% between 2017 and 2020– to the iconic Reserva 2004 –which got 100 Parker Points–, as well as the Reserva 2006 – chosen as the best Rioja wine in 2020 by the magazine The Drinks Business. One thing is clear: the wines of Remírez de Ganuza get better with time.
The great new feature with which the company is starting the year is their launch of a unique white wine: Gran Reserva 2013 –an exceptional vintage for the white varieties of the Rioja region–, 100% Viura grapes from a plot planted in 1978, characterized by its perfect orientation in a calcareous clay land and its steep slope with shallow soil, which helps stopping the vigor of the vines. The aging of this wine was carried out in new French oak barrels for 11 months, and the product was bottled in 2014. A total of 3,000 bottles have been produced and, not yet having been put on sale, they are already fully reserved by renowned restaurants and collectors alike. The specialized international press has described the company’s Blanco Gran Reserva 2013 as a “game changing white,” a description that defines the spirit of this innovative winery quite well.
