The San Sebastián Aquarium, founded in 1928, is one of the most visited tourist resources in the Basque Country, welcoming more than 300,000 people annually. Starting this year and aiming to better serve the most demanding visitors, in addition to their usual museum visit, they will also offer the possibility of scheduling a VIP tour of the facilities.
Clients who choose this second option are welcomed at the main entrance of the building with priority access and are accompanied by an expert guide throughout the entire visit. They tour the two floors of the Aquarium where the 31 tanks dedicated to the Cantabrian Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and tropical fauna are located, in which the diversity of the high seas can be discovered.
In the museum section, the guide explains the most valuable heritage elements belonging to the Aquarium so that visitors can better understand the evolution of the Basque maritime trade, shipyards, whalers, and privateering. We must remember that this is one of Europe’s first oceanographic museums, thus it houses a privileged collection of pieces.
The VIP tour continues with access to the Aquarium’s technical areas –restricted to the general public– where visitors will have the chance to feed the fish and discover the inner workings of the complex system of water tanks that keep the facility running.
The visit also includes access to the temporary exhibition rooms, where works of art linked to the sea are on display.
The braver visitors also have the chance to don a diving suit and jump into the Oceanarium to swim with sharks. It’s a real adventure!
The tour ends with a farewell aperitif served in the most special part of the building: the Oceanarium tunnel. This is a glass tunnel with 360º visibility that is submerged in a large tank filled with 1,500,000 liters of water and inhabited by 7,000 fish. A true spectacle for the eyes and a unique place to make a toast under the sea.
