From May 26 to 29, one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year will be held at the Pasaia Port: the Pasaia Maritime Festival. Conceptualized as a biennial event, the inaugural edition of this festival was held in 2018 and, after an obligatory pause due to the restrictions applied during the COVID-19 pandemic, the second edition will be held this spring, bringing together historical vessels and other traditional boats from different parts of Europe.
The 2018 event shined with the presence of L’Hermione, a replica of the great French ship of the same name built in 1779, and this year’s expectations reach even higher, as the Oosterschelde, a Dutch schooner from 1917, will participate, as well as a replica built in 1999 in Saint Petersburg of the Shtandart, a Russian frigate that belonged to Tsar Peter the Great.
In addition to these two star ships and the dozens of other ships that will take part in the festival, Portugal will be the main player in the 2022 edition as this country has been named Ocean Culture Guest of Honor by the festival’s organization. The Pasaia Bay will host traditional Portuguese vessels while the dock will feature brass bands, dances, fado, and Portuguese food.
The activities that will accompany the event will be held in the four municipalities that make up the bay: San Pedro, San Juan, Antxo, and Trintxerpe. The program includes, among others, an international conference on maritime history, solidarity stands, concerts, workshops, and exhibitions. All this will round off the attractive offer of this festival: an encounter that will undoubtedly help to make people aware of the culture and history of what was once the main whaling port in Europe.
