San Sebastian is once again shining as it did in the Belle Époque, having become the tourism capital of the Basque Country. Each year, new accommodation options become available with concepts and proposals that set them apart and surprise travelers. In some cases, these options even get the locals excited. That is the case of Lasala Plaza Hotel, the latest hotel to open in the city.
This superior 4-star hotel is located in the heart of the Old Town, in a building that dates back to 1917 and has just been fully renovated, with its neoclassical French façade being conserved. The hotel’s leitmotif is the city’s culture: the sea, the fishing port, its history, the streets in which its people mingle, and the arts. Its tavern has been dubbed La Jarana (“The Jovial Place”), and that is precisely what they’ve achieved: it’s a meeting place, one that is festive, not too structured – a place where the locals and those from outside of the area can eat and drink together, happily.
One of the hotel’s façades faces the port directly; thus, some of the rooms, La Jarana, and the rooftop terrace offer unparalleled views of La Concha Bay. Its rooftop terrace with a spectacular outdoor pool also provides a 360º view of the Old Town, the center, the Gros District, and Mount Urgull.
The 58 rooms at the Lasala Plaza have been exquisitely decorated to give them a special warmth and identity. To decorate the common areas of the establishment’s six floors, work has been undertaken in conjunction with the San Telmo Museum, Aquarium, Mota Museum of Mount Urgull, Albaola, the Oiasso Roman Museum, and the Naval Museum. In this way, collotypes, etchings, and sculptures are put on display in the hotel, making it an itinerant gallery.
Lasala Plaza Hotel has achieved what few hotels in the Basque Country achieve: to be loved by the region’s own citizens and to become a happy melting pot of cultures.
