Sorgin Gallery: A Dialogue between Brazilian Modernism and Basque Creativity
In San Sebastián, located in a historic residence with privileged views over the Cantabrian Sea, stands Sorgin Gallery. This project by Brazilian art dealer Mírian Badaró —a professional with over fifteen years of international experience— has made a name for itself as a leading space where art, design, and heritage coexist harmoniously.
The gallery is made up of a sculpture garden that opens to the sea and several interior spaces that exude serenity and refinement. Inside those spaces, masterpieces of Brazilian modernism engage in dialogue with contemporary creations by international artists.
The vintage collection brings together essential names from 1950s and 1960s Brazilian design, such as Joaquim Tenreiro, José Zanine Caldas, Jorge Zalszupin, Sergio Rodrigues, Geraldo de Barros, Martin Eisler, Carlo Hauner, Lina Bo Bardi, Jean Gillon, Giuseppe Scapinelli, Flávio de Carvalho, and Paulo Mendes da Rocha.
These iconic pieces coexist naturally with works by contemporary creators such as the Portuguese studio Mameluca, designer Adeline Halot, a member of Belgium’s Zaventem Ateliers creative hub, French artists Dora Stanczel and Anaïs Vindel, Swiss designer and material researcher Fabio Hendry, and Brazilians Bob Wolfenson, Inês Schertel, and Domingos Tótora. Completing the proposal are the striking sculptures of Hugo França and Raul Mourão, displayed throughout the property.
The gallery’s connection with the Basque Country is reflected in the presence of marble sculptures and tableware by Joseba Lekuona Yaben, the evocative light and shadow compositions of Borja Jiménez, contemporary jewelry designed by architect Charo Casteres, and in the rugs by Nanimarquina — textile renditions of Eduardo Chillida’s paintings.
Mírian Badaró’s curatorial vision —where geographies, eras, and sensibilities converge— has captured the attention of numerous collectors and cultural figures. Events held at the gallery have been attended by film directors such as Luc Knowles and María Ripoll, as well as actors of the stature of Miguel Ángel Muñoz, Kira Miró, Hiba Abouk, and Jorge Fernández. Thus, Sorgin Gallery underscores San Sebastián’s cosmopolitan character and its rising profile on the international art and design scene
