Feet on the ground and hands in the waters of the sea. That mix gives rise to the cuisine at Saltxipi. A selection of the best of the sea and the land. Respectful handling of all ingredients. Teasing something superior out of them. The professionals at Saltxipi have worked coaxing fire from embers for an entire lifetime, fusing the flames and the aromas, enhancing taste – because everything tastes special on an open grill. It is impossible to match the aroma that the grill brings to the ingredients. That is the essence of their culinary delights. Simplicity raised to a superior category.
With its half a century of history, this restaurant in San Sebastián is currently managed by the third generation of the same family that founded it – and they run it with a nod to their past. A nod to tradition and a nod that makes this establishment a place that has been nourishing smiles for decades, based on three principles: the best ingredients, precise cooking, and great service in a cozy atmosphere.
Txangurro (spider crab meat) croquettes, cod omelet, boiled spider crab, and grilled Galician beef chop: this is what has made (and continues to make) Saltxipi famous for so many years in the past and to come. From the very start, customers enjoyed the spider crab so much that they had to set up their own hatchery. Since then, this delicacy of the sea has been another member of the family.
Fresh grilled foie, rice with clams, grilled spiny lobster, and grilled seabream are other notable dishes on their menu – a menu which is sweetened by their homemade desserts at the end: cheesecake with blueberries, puffed pastry, and apple pie.
There are many well-known faces from the world of politics, sports, business, and the arts who have stopped in at Saltxipi. In fact, the restaurant has two private dining rooms. And that is no wonder. This place exudes the tradition of the Basque farmhouse, its grass, its customs… the brown color of the exposed wood and the white color of the limestone, linen tablecloths, and terracotta floor tiles. And, of course, the fire, the earth, and the sea.
