The conversion of one of the most well-known hotels of Switzerland, the Eden au Lac, into a hotel by the La Réserve Hotel Chain has not gone unnoticed – especially since it was made known that the remodel would be done by the always controversial Philippe Starck. To find out all about the metamorphosis firsthand, BASQUE LUXURY visited the hotel before and after its renovation. The building, a classic construction raised 110 years ago along the shore of a lake, needed urgent updating. And, not being satisfied with just a few cosmetic touch-ups here and there, Philippe Starck completely transformed the hotel by introducing a new leitmotif: the hotel’s conception as an imaginary yacht club.
To accomplish this feat, Starck took away the majority of the hotel’s classic ornamental elements inside, exhuming the original brick and mortar structure and showing it off for all to see. Likewise, his quasi-archaeological work brought precious marble and wood floors to light. The result? A beautiful hotel that offers a more ‘current’ take on the building’s history.
After its remodel, La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich was launched as a five-star hotel with 40 beautiful rooms and suites and two exceptional dining spaces. The first of the two, Eden Kitchen & Bar, is on the ground floor and features an internationally inspired open kitchen run by Italian Executive Chef Marco Ortolani. The second one, La Muña, is on the building’s rooftop and features an extraordinary vaulted interior space and two separate terraces. Chef Miya Gunji has created a Peruvian-Japanese menu for this restaurant with which locals have fallen in love.
Just like La Muña, the hotel’s rooms and suites also have nods to ships’ cabins thanks to the materials used for their decoration and the ubiquitous lake that can be seen from their windows and terraces.
Michel Reybier, owner of Michel Reybier Hospitality, has managed to stamp La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich with the brand’s typical elegance and great degree of refinement. That fact, alongside the decoration by Philippe Starck and the excellent service by the hotel’s staff, make the Eden au Lac one of the most desirable and recommendable accommodation options in Switzerland.
