One of the most anticipated pieces of news in the world of luxury hospitality was the launch of Nobu in San Sebastián. Nobu hotels –run by celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro, and producer and entrepreneur Meir Teper– are known for combining modernity, luxury, and minimalist Japanese tradition with a unique dining experience.
The history of the Nobu brand begins in the late 1980s, when Robert De Niro first visited Matsuhisa’s sushi restaurant of the same name in Los Angeles. It would take four years to convince the chef to expand to Manhattan and, in 1994, Nobu made its debut on a quiet Tribeca block. The restaurant, which quickly garnered popularity and universal acclaim, was hailed as revolutionary for both its unprecedented flavor combinations and unexpected design. Encouraged by increasing popularity and growth as the restaurants expanded, Nobu Hospitality was born. In 2009, shareholders approached hospitality gurus Trevor Horwell and Struan McKenzie to lead the strategic approach to growing Nobu Hotels & Residences into the hospitality powerhouse that it is today, with fifty restaurants and 18 hotels around the world – and they have another 21 lodges planned.
In the case of the San Sebastián hotel, it is located in the former Vista Eder Palace on Paseo de Miraconcha – one of the last historic buildings in the bay. It has 17 rooms and suites and a Japanese restaurant that has managed to dazzle the most demanding palates in the city with the most Michelin Stars per square meter in the world thanks to a completely new range of flavors for the Basque culinary scene.
Above the restaurant is the spectacular Nobu Terrace, dedicated to breakfast and bar service. Its unbeatable views have made it one of the favorites to enjoy the sunset, snack on a light dinner, and –above all– discover the signature cocktail menu.
Guests staying in the 17 elegant rooms of this five-star establishment, all of which have sea views, also have exclusive access to the spectacular rooftop terrace with an infinity pool, the gym (open 24/7 and equipped with state-of-the-art Technogym machines), and the La Perla Spa, a leading thalassotherapy center located next to the hotel. At La Perla, guests can take part in group yoga, TRX, and body building activities and enjoy beauty treatments with products by the Nobu firm.
The establishment in San Sebastián is Nobu’s fifth hotel in Spain (after Barcelona, Marbella, Ibiza, and Seville), thanks to the chain’s alliance with the Millenium Hospitality Real Estate management company. The brand’s arrival in the Basque Country has been welcomed with great enthusiasm, especially due to its innovative hotel concept based on the gastronomic facet – something which enriches the region’s already varied culinary offerings.
