Miguel Balliache is a Basque-Venezuelan artist whose work is present in private collections throughout America, Europe, and Asia. Born in Caracas and a resident of San Sebastián since 2004, Balliache has participated in solo and group exhibitions in the USA, Venezuela, Spain, and Ireland. His latest solo show, entitled Bibrak, was inaugurated in the summer of 2022 at the Bastero Cultural Center of Andoain: a selection of works that express thoughts, vibrations, and sensations of color in painting, ceramics, and sculpture.
In addition to the exhibitions in which he regularly participates, the artist has his own gallery in San Sebastián, called Balliache Art Space, where he permanently exhibits his collection of paintings and sculptures. Located in the Egia District, near the Tabakalera Contemporary Culture Center, this studio houses, in addition to the exhibition gallery, the artist’s creation space and a workshop where he teaches ceramics and painting courses. Cultural dissemination and integration in the neighborhood are the fundamental pillars on which Balliache Art Space rests; that is why the artist promotes workshops and courses on the development of creative processes.
The expressionist universe of Balliache, which moves between the intuitive and the organic, differs notably from traditional Basque plastic art. The artist’s ability to mix techniques gives him a wide range of expression. His language –rich and original– is based on the use of materials that he finds in the street (string, iron, sticks, cloth) and in nature, giving them primitive forms. When confronting the canvas, he does so in a harrowing, striking way – the result of deep introspection formulated in a tremendously eloquent way. To be able to view his work throughout the year at Balliache Art Space is a privilege and an opportunity for collectors and lovers of culture alike.
