Entrecanales Domecq e Hijos is one of the most important wine groups in Spain, with 129 years of experience in the aging and production of high-quality wines recognized by national and international critics. With vineyards and wineries that are part of the most prestigious Designations of Origin and with 400 hectares owned, this company shapes its identity through exceptional wines such as Secreto, Anzil, Caserío de Dueñas, El Aeronauta, and Cosme Palacio, from the Ribera del Duero, Toro, Rueda, Valdeorras, and Rioja Designations of Origin, respectively. It is relevant to mention the role played by the company in the latter Designation of Origin, as Cosme Palacio Winery was the forerunner of the modern Rioja and the first winery to open a space dedicated to wine tourism in the Rioja Alavesa region (in 1991). Today, the business group has decided to breathe new life into the winery by inaugurating, after seven years of remodeling, an exclusive luxury accommodation option with an avant-garde concept: La Casa Cosme Palacio.
Located next to the medieval town of Laguardia, the building that houses the hotel (erected in 1894) was renovated by architect Gregorio Marañón, resulting in a hotel with 13 rooms, of which four are suites. The exterior spaces have been designed by landscaper María Medina, and the interior decoration has been managed by interior designer Cristina Arechabala, who has created spaces aimed at promoting tranquility and relaxation for the guests, with a style featuring simple and functional lines following the trends of minimalism and excellence without fanfare: comfortable spaces, with a clear use of cream tones, with furniture that is neither boastful nor excessively decorated, thus giving prominence to the architecture and the historic environment of the winery itself. In addition to the 13 rooms, the property includes a dining room, a sitting room, a beautiful central gallery where the hundred-year-old tanks are located, some stables (now converted into a museum) where the clients’ most special celebrations take place, and a swimming pool with views of the Ebro Valley.
The sine qua non condition to stay at La Casa Cosme Palacio is to reserve the property in its entirety. With an area of 4,000 m2, this luxury hotel has a capacity for 26 guests and offers all kinds of courtesy services worthy of a five-star hotel: a butler 24 hours a day, premium amenities, electric bicycles, beauty treatments, a guests manager, and exclusive experiences such as a private tasting at the winery and a dinner paired with old vintages in the hundred-year-old cellars. The culinary proposal at La Casa, for whose conception the establishment was advised by the prestigious Basque Culinary Center, offers local and market cuisine focused on conveying the region’s identity through local products, some of which come from the hotel’s own garden – all this accompanied by the signature wines from their winery.
The philosophy at La Casa Cosme Palacio is aligned with the trend that experts in the hotel sector expect for the coming years: emphasizing the authenticity of the experience in a local context, in addition to privacy, exclusivity, and comfort. This is responsible tourism, slow travel in which the visitor goes to fewer places but spends more time in them – yielding greater benefits for the destination, with a strong local economic impact. In the words of Gonzalo Entrecanales, president of Entrecanales Domecq e Hijos: “Our goal is to offer our guests a unique experience that is very exclusive and integrated into the local context. This project aims to help our guests discover all the wealth that the Rioja Alavesa region and its surrounding area can offer us: its wines, gastronomy, culture, and natural landscape. La Casa Cosme Palacio came to be with an important essence and family bond; that’s why the concept aligns with a type of private accommodation in which we seek to ensure that our guests enjoy their company and the environment as if they were in our own home.”
