Throughout the centuries, the seven arts have shaped the ways societies express sensitivity, ingenuity, and worldview: architecture, sculpture, painting, music, dance, poetry, and filmmaking. Among them, architecture holds a unique place because of its ability to merge function, technique, and beauty, creating spaces that are both habitable and artistic. A paradigmatic example is the Marqués de Riscal Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in the Rioja Alavesa region, designed by Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry and inaugurated in 2006.
The hotel is part of the City of Wine, an ambitious wine tourism complex that is part of the historic Marqués de Riscal winery, founded in 1858. Within this context, Gehry conceived a sculptural main building whose geometry deliberately eschews orthogonality, complemented by an annexed volume connected via an elevated walkway.
The exterior envelope is one of the hotel’s most iconic elements: it is made of rose-colored titanium, evoking wine; gold titanium, referencing the distinctive netting of Marqués de Riscal bottles; and mirror-finished stainless steel, reminiscent of the foil capsules that cover bottle necks. These metallic panels form a living skin that captures and transforms natural light, draping the building in a constantly changing play of reflections that shift with the hours and seasons.
Inside, the hotel’s 61 rooms and suites —each unique in form, orientation, and perspective— invite guests to experience architecture from within. Expansive windows frame views of the vineyards and the historic center of Elciego, while fine materials and warm tones provide comfort and elegance. The offering is completed with a gastronomic restaurant, a grill house, a wine bar/bistro, a traditional restaurant, event spaces, a gym, and a spa where guests can enjoy vinotherapy treatments curated by the French brand Caudalie.
The entire complex establishes a harmonious dialogue between the region’s wine legacy and contemporary architectural language. The result transcends hospitality: it is a creation where technique and art converge, meant to be experienced as much as admired.
