It’s always a good idea to mention the city of Hondarribia as one of the featured destinations of the Basque Country due to its architectural wealth, its cuisine, and its privileged location. In the last few years, this city has become an attraction for tourists yet, nevertheless, it has managed to maintain the local flavor that it is characterized by. Those who visit this seafaring town say that it is permeated with an atmosphere that must be experienced and felt at least once in your life.
The city is surrounded by a medieval wall, the only one in the historical territory of Gipuzkoa. In its interior, cobbled streets lead to the Old Town, dotted with wooden houses of Basque style that feature balconies painted in different colors. At the top of the city stands the impressive fortress built at the end of the tenth century by King Sancho II of Pamplona, a stone building that houses the Parador de Hondarribia Lodge in its interior. From here, the visitor’s eyes can be delighted by the Cantabrian Sea, the Txingudi Bay, and –on the other side– the French town of Hendaye.
The visit continues in the La Marina neighborhood, where there are well-known shops, businesses, and restaurants that have given the city a claim to fame. The city is also known for its long beach that stretches out over almost a kilometer, a beach chosen each year by thousands of people looking to enjoy the summer sun.
The walk along the bay can’t be beat and it ends up in the neighboring French town of Hendaye. Throughout the year, a boat sails in the waters of the estuary of the Bidasoa River, uniting the two areas that the waters of the Txingudi Bay separate, thus connecting the two municipalities. It’s a unique opportunity to discover the contrasts between both countries.
