“Eurythmy” is surely the word that best defines the works of Joseba Lekuona Yaben: this stone aficionado has been working as a stonemason and artist for more than 30 years, creating handcrafted pieces that harmonically combine proportions, lines, colors, and sounds. His creative process begins in the quarry, seeking out his materials personally. For each piece, he investigates, awakens, and involves his emotions and intellect, making himself available to the stone and the design.
His vast experience as a stonemason –carrying out restoration work on historic buildings, reproductions of Romanesque capitals, heraldic charges, fireplaces, baptismal fonts, and religious sculptures– has provided him with the necessary technical knowledge to delve into a dialog with the stone, making each cut, each finish, and each polish something unique, designed to provide a distinguished experience.
Under the umbrella of his brand Hartea, Lekuona creates sculptural tableware in marble, sandstone, limestone, volcanic rock, and basalt, cataloged into three different lines: Design, cylinders with a perfect polished finish; Organic, harmoniously configured by combining the polished interior with a textured exterior; and Sculpture, which explores the limits of stone with anthropomorphic silhouettes.
Each of these pieces of tableware is born of and part of a ball of stone. Each sculpture proposes a unique twist on the world of gastronomy. Each diner interprets the piece in accordance with their intention, giving rise to an important moment. Each experience is unique and elevates eating to the category of art. Each piece calls for a game between the diners and the art itself, between the art and the food, between the masterpiece and the emotions; a game with unique nuances and which varies as much as the intentions of each individual involved therein. The works of art are, after all, a proposal for dialog: through these luxury tableware pieces, Lekuona invites diners to interact with the materials in a poetic and playful sense, allowing them to enjoy an exceptional gastronomic experience.
Hartea creates poetry with stone, soaking up its nature and transforming the raw material into a work of art; increasing the value of a natural element that is typical of our land, bringing it to the table. This sculptural tableware is sold at the Lukas boutique of the María Cristina Hotel of San Sebastián, the culinary capital of the Basque Country – a suitable place to show off the natural elegance of this art that puts into balance the coexistence of ephemeral food and eternal stone.
