The Basque Country treasures a proud golfing heritage —the birthplace of legendary figures like Jon Rahm, José María Olazábal, and Adrián Otaegui. The region’s connection to the sport dates back to 1903, when the first documented image of golf in the Basque Country was taken on the slopes of Ulía Mountain, in San Sebastián, on the grounds of Villa Zinza. A few years later, in 1910, the Sociedad Campo de Golf y Otros Deportes (“Golf Course and Other Sports Society”) was established, and by 1914, a nine-hole course had opened in Lasarte, marking the formal birth of golf in the region.
Today, the Basque Country boasts a carefully curated network of courses, spread between the coast and inland areas, allowing golfers to enjoy their sport surrounded by spectacular natural beauty. Larrabea, Zuia, Jundiz, Izki, Real Sociedad de Golf de Neguri, Meaztegi, Uraburu, Basozabal, the Royal Golf Club of Zarauz, Goiburu, and the Royal Golf Club of San Sebastián are just a few destinations where sport and landscape blend seamlessly. Yet, playing golf in this region transcends the sporting experience: it means immersing oneself in a land of charming villages, historic cities, and world-renowned gastronomy.
In Álava, golfing facilities are set in privileged natural surroundings. The province is dotted with reservoirs (like those of Ullibarri, Urrunaga, Albina, and Maroño), as well as having Lake Arreo and the Laguardia wetlands — all enriching its landscape and biodiversity. It is also home to five natural parks (Gorbeia, Urkiola, Aizkorri-Aratz, Izki, and Valderejo), offering countless opportunities for walking and cycling through forests and mountains. Historic routes like the Way of Saint James and the Ignatian Way cross this territory, inviting visitors to experience a deep connection with nature and history.
In Bizkaia, golf finds its place both along the coast and inland. Notable clubs such as Real Sociedad de Golf de Neguri, Meaztegi, and Uraburu are surrounded by landscapes where traditional farmhouses, remnants of old ironworks, and stately towers coexist. In addition, the ever-present sea embraces beaches ideal for water sports and fishing towns that preserve the spirit of a rich maritime heritage. The Way of Saint James likewise runs along this coastline, offering breathtaking views. Natural sites like the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and the Armañón and Gorbeia natural parks round off a first-class offering.
Gipuzkoa presents a unique geography —full of contrasts and character— where golfers play against a backdrop of green valleys which merge with the deep blue seas. After exploring courses such as Basozabal, the Royal Golf Club of Zarauz, Goiburu, and the Royal Golf Club of San Sebastián, players inevitably fall under the spell of the coastline and its one-of-a-kind beaches — known for their waves and home to prestigious international surfing competitions. Inland, traditional farmhouses and grazing flocks maintain time-honored ways of life that blend harmoniously with the landscape, creating an atmosphere of authenticity and calm.
Golf in the Basque Country is more than just a game: it is surrendering to a land where sporting tradition meets unforgettable scenery, living heritage, and a way of life that invites one to slow down and truly enjoy.
