The location, the views, the services, the dining… there are many factors that make a hotel stay a first-class experience, but the most important element of all is the rest you get from a good bed. In that regard, the work that Etxabe Confort has been undertaking for three generations comes into play. This family business with two boutiques in Zarautz makes it their task to provide quality beds to hotels and homes that understand the health implications of getting a good night’s sleep.
Their latest hospitality industry job was to update the beds at the Karlos Arguiñano Hotel. This twentieth-century mansion which looms imposingly over the beach at Zarautz already had Vispring beds in its suites – all of which were installed by Etxabe Confort. This time the double and single rooms were updated, for which the hotel opted for luxury mattresses by Smattex. Karlos Arguiñano –the famous Basque chef who, through his television shows, has mentored countless generations of viewers in the culinary arts– opted for the following ingredients in his recipe for the perfect bed: 1 kg/m2 of cotton, 500 g/m2 of wool, 500 g/m2 of linen, 500 g/m2 of bamboo fiber, and 500 g/m2 of mohair. The use of high-quality natural fibers as opposed to materials that have undergone a transformation process is one of the most notable characteristics of Smattex. In this way, they manage to take full advantage of the functional qualities of the materials that make up their products’ padding: the cotton they use has the outstanding property of getting rid of moisture and offering an excellent degree of breathability; their wool, obtained from the Merino sheep, stands out because of its elasticity and softness; the linen employed absorbs water and does not get full of static electricity; their bamboo is extremely soft and its structure favors breathability; and the mohair they have chosen, from the Angora goat, absorbs and releases moisture from the air, being cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The result? Firm, handcrafted mattresses to ensure guest comfort.
In 2023, Etxabe Confort also installed the mattresses and sofas of all the rooms at the luxury Ur Bare Hotel, likewise in Zarautz. In this case, fully customized beds from British manufacturer Vispring were chosen. Said firm is famous, among other reasons, for having made the first-class mattresses on the Titanic. Vispring was a pioneer of the vanadium-coated steel pocket spring, used in both the mattress and the divan, allowing for unprecedented resistance and flexibility. That weightless comfort is topped off by the use of only the finest natural materials –cashmere, Tussah silk, cotton, horsetail hair, alpaca, bamboo, mohair, vicuña wool– and the labor-intensive, manual side sewing of the company’s mattresses, featuring hand-tied tufting with a contoured shape and the high-end, delicate, Belgian damask ticking.
The Karlos Arguiñano Hotel and Ur Bare are just a few examples of the hotel industry projects carried out by Etxabe Confort. They have also undertaken work in other autonomous communities at places like the Señorío de Briñas Hotel (located in La Rioja) and the El Jardín de Carrejo Hotel of Cantabria. Added to this are all the beds installed over more than three decades in homes throughout Spain and abroad, guaranteeing a restful sleep for many.
