Do you know what the rooms of the newly opened Ur Bare Hotel of Zarautz and the first-class cabins of the Titanic have in common? Rest. In both cases the beds were made by Vispring, the London-based luxury bed manufacturer that has been providing restful sleep to Europe’s crème de la crème since 1901. The secret to their success is the pioneering vanadium-coated steel pocket spring used in both the mattress and the divan, allowing for unprecedented resistance and flexibility. That weightless comfort is topped off by the use of only the finest natural materials –cashmere, Tussah silk, cotton, horsetail hair, alpaca, bamboo, mohair, vicuña wool– and the labor-intensive, manual side stitching of the company’s mattresses, featuring handmade tufts with a contoured shape and the high-end, delicate, Belgian damask ticking.
In the Basque Country, Vispring is represented by Etxabe Confort, a third-generation family business that has two boutiques in Zarautz: one dedicated to the sale of high- and mid-range mattresses and divans, and the other which caters to those seeking bed accessories. In addition to supplying the Ur Bare Hotel, Etxabe Confort has also installed Vispring beds at the Karlos Arguiñano Hotel in the same municipality, as well as at the Señorío de Briñas Hotel in La Rioja, at the El Jardín de Carrejo Hotel in Cantabria, and in numerous homes in Spain, France, and Switzerland.
At the Etxabe Confort boutique, customers can touch and select the materials and choose the size and firmness (soft, medium, firm, extra firm) of the mattress that best suits their needs, as each mattress and divan is handcrafted to the client’s unique specifications and needs. Featuring nine different gauges of wire and 74 different types of springs to choose from, both partners in the relationship can even choose their own spring tension for their side of the bed.
In addition to Vispring, Etxabe Confort also works with the Spanish manufacturer Smattex, having undertaken a joint collaborative effort therewith for the design of a bed to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the shop. Given the name Gran Reserva, this bed with 300 springs per m2 (each of which measures 15 cm and has six spirals) and fine materials like camel wool, merino wool, cotton, mohair, cashmere, and silk will inevitably bring you into the arms of Morpheus.
