Equestrian Elegance: Exploring Gipuzkoa on Horseback
Horseback riding is deeply woven into the landscape and lifestyle of Gipuzkoa. Beyond being a sport, it is a way of connecting with nature — traversing mountains, valleys, and coastlines atop a horse. With scenic trails, equestrian centers scattered throughout the province, and a century-old racecourse, this tradition remains both vibrant and ever evolving in this area.
During the summer, the heart of the equestrian season is the San Sebastián Racecourse, inaugurated in 1916. Its crown jewel, the Copa de Oro (“Gold Cup”), is held every August 15, drawing international attention to this coastal city. The season is topped off with 14 additional racing days between June and September. This sports venue is part of Europe’s elite circuit, hosting the distinguished French Le Défi du Galop championship — an event that enhances its global prestige. It also serves as a training ground: every day, dozens of horses prepare at the San Sebastián Racecourse for their moment of glory at the starting gate. Thoroughbreds, betting, predictions, trainers, jockeys, and prizes combine to offer a unique experience for fans and visitors.
The equestrian spirit extends far beyond the racecourse: throughout Gipuzkoa, numerous centers offer horseback excursions. In Zaldibia and Abaltzisketa, trails wind through beech forests, while in Aia and Lastur, riders cross rural landscapes of striking charm. In the inland valleys of municipalities like Ezkio-Itsaso, Bergara, Arrasate, Oñati, and Legazpi, the horses follow ancient routes once used for cattle drives. There are also schools that offer itineraries, classes, and activities centered around the pottoka, the Basque pony — a living symbol of the local environment.
Bidasoa and Oarsoaldea also have an equestrian presence, especially in towns such as Irun, Oiartzun, and Errenteria. In Mutriku, riding lessons and guided routes are organized through the Basque Coast Geopark. In San Sebastián, clubs such as the Real Sociedad Hípica de San Sebastián (“Royal Equestrian Society of San Sebastián”) keep the enthusiasm alive with training sessions and rides. Meanwhile, in Urnieta and Usurbil, horseback routes run among farmhouses; and in Aretxabaleta, it is possible to circle the Urkulu Reservoir by carriage.
Donkeys also play an important role in Gipuzkoa: in Berastegi, walks with donkeys offer a different and relaxed way to explore the mountainous landscape, discovering the area from another perspective and enjoying nature in good company.
