Eduardo Chillida Suite: this new suite at the María Cristina Hotel is designed to represent the artistic universe of the most renowned Basque sculptor
In 2024 and in order to commemorate the 100 years that had passed since the birth of Eduardo Chillida, the historic, five-star María Cristina Hotel in San Sebastián opened a new suite designed to represent the Basque sculptor’s artistic universe: the Eduardo Chillida Suite.
Measuring 77 m2, the suite reflects the hotel’s signature majesty and refinement. It features an entrance with elegant moldings that opens up to a magnificent oval living room. Decorated in a range of gray and beige colors, the living room features a majestic wool rug in the center that was provided by the firm Nanimarquina and which draws inspiration from Chillida’s “Collage,” created in 1996. On either side of the floor covering, guests will find a chaise longue and sofa covered with cushions featuring well-known motifs from the artist’s graphic work.
Presiding over the living room are two original works by Chillida: “La Nuit,” an etching from 1995, and the lithograph “Gurutze Gorria II,” from 1984. Next to the desk, the space is topped off with some old personal photographs of the artist. On the tables, guests will find the four volumes of the “Eduardo Chillida Opus” book collection, as well as other reference books like “Writings,” where more can be discovered about the sculptor’s career.
Another original fills the suite’s bedroom with art: it is the etching “Ulertu,” from 1973. Additionally, on the chaise longue located at the foot of the four-poster bed, there is a sheep’s wool blanket made in Scotland that showcases a motif based on the work “Sin título, dibujo tinta” from 1991.
In the entrance that leads to the dressing area and bathroom off the bedroom, guests come across a photograph of one of the most important pieces of the artist’s career: “In Praise of the Horizon,” from 1990 – a large concrete sculpture located in Gijón.
The Eduardo Chillida Suite, created thanks to the collaborative efforts between the María Cristina Hotel and the Eduardo Chillida – Pilar Belzunce Foundation, is not permanent in nature. Thus, if you wish to enjoy the luxury of staying in a room with original works by Chillida, you must do so during 2025. What’s more, guests booking this suite receive two tickets to visit the Chillida Leku Museum.
