Casa Munoa: this historic jewelry shop in San Sebastián is celebrating its 90th anniversary
This year marks the 90th anniversary of Casa Munoa, a jewelry store that has become a leader for creativity and technical quality in the Basque Country since its inception. Today the business is managed by the third generation of the family that founded it, with Claudio Munoa at the helm, accompanied by his husband Gonzalo. The establishment stands out for having its own workshop inside the store itself, thus being able to design, manufacture, and sell the pieces it makes in-house.
The boutique, located in the Old Quarter of San Sebastián, attracts attention from the outside thanks to its carefully designed window displays, always aligned with the city’s major events (like San Sebastián Day and the International Film Festival). Inside the establishment, display cases house pieces made by the jeweler since 1935, and in the shop’s archives one can find books and drawings of jewelry created by different members of the Munoa family over the years; a true historical testimony to the legacy of the jewelry store. On the upper floor is Claudio’s design studio, where he gives free rein to his profuse creativity when designing his pieces. His drawings then go to the workshop, where Félix, Ane, and Carlos –the master jewelers– do true magic, yielding unique pieces that form part of the history of the Basque jewelry trade.
In addition to conceiving the shop’s own fine jewelry collection, Claudio also designs pieces to order using any of the metals, gems, and characteristics that his customers would like.
