Casa Munoa is a jewelry shop in San Sebastián that is part of the history of good Basque craftsmanship. This emblematic firm has been a part of life in San Sebastián since the Belle Époque, continuing to exist now in the twenty-first century. The continuous work of three generations of the Munoa family, applying traditional goldsmithing techniques, has yielded pieces of significance which feature innovative designs.
The first generation of the Munoa family, trained at Relojería Suiza Jewelers, belonging to Pablo Beiner (supplier of the Royal Household), opened the first establishment in 1935 on Alameda del Boulevard in San Sebastián. In 1958 they relocated to Aldamar street (their current location), where Rafael Munoa took over (the second generation of the family). Rafael was special in that he managed to bring his boundless creativity to jewelry design, with influences from Balenciaga, Chanel, and the artistic world of Luis Buñuel, with whom he came to live.
In 1985 Claudio Munoa, the third generation, began to spend long periods in the family workshop and to become interested in goldsmithing. After studying jewelry and design at the Massana School in Barcelona and participating in various courses organized by the accredited Parisian school of “Bijouterie, Joaillerie et Orfèvrerie,” he continued his career in the family boutique – where he received his true education. Over time, Claudio managed to dominate both the technical field (in which the first Munoa generation stood out) and the creative field (which was the strong point of the second generation), and today he continues at the helm of this renowned jeweler, designing each of the pieces that come to life in the workshop, which is located in the store itself.
In addition to creating the shop’s fine jewelry collection, Claudio also designs made-to-order pieces using any of the metals, gems, and characteristics that his customers would like. He also repairs and restores old pieces of jewelry, updating them or creating new pieces from them. Thanks to professionals like Claudio, who has dedicated his life to preserving his family’s tradition, we are fortunate to continue to have establishments in the Basque Country like Casa Munoa, whose shop displays showcase an intergenerational legacy.
