Brad Pitt: “Eduardo Chillida Is My All-Time Favorite Sculptor”
Brad Pitt has returned to the San Sebastián International Film Festival 17 years after his last visit to present Heart of the Beast, David Ayer’s new film, screening out of competition in the Official Selection of the 74th edition. His presence has generated enormous excitement since his arrival in the city, culminating this Wednesday with the presentation of the film to the press.
During the press conference, the American actor also spoke about his time in San Sebastián and some of the moments he has been able to enjoy away from his professional commitments. The sea, gastronomy, and, above all, art have played a prominent role in a visit that has allowed him to reconnect with one of his greatest artistic references: Eduardo Chillida.
“It’s been wonderful to be back in San Sebastián. I got to spend some time by the sea, see some beautiful art — including work by my all-time favorite sculptor, Eduardo Chillida — and enjoy some really nice food. So it’s been lovely to be here,” Pitt said.
The actor’s admiration for the Basque artist is nothing new. During his previous appearance at the Festival in 2009, when he attended alongside Quentin Tarantino to present Inglourious Basterds, Pitt visited Chillida Leku. Seventeen years later, the sculptor’s work is once again connected to his time in the Basque Country, this time through Pitt’s own words.
His return to the Festival comes with Heart of the Beast, an adventure thriller directed by David Ayer in which he plays James Belmont, a retired Special Forces officer who, following a plane crash, becomes stranded in the Alaskan wilderness alongside his former combat dog, Odin.
Pitt has once again left his mark on the Festival while also offering a glimpse into his personal connection with the Basque Country. Beyond the spotlights and red carpets, his visit has been shaped by much simpler pleasures: spending time by the sea, enjoying good food, and reconnecting with the work of the artist he considers his all-time favorite sculptor.
