Preserving and promoting the biodiversity that is part of the vineyard ecosystem is essential for Mariasun, Gonzalo, and Iñigo Sáenz de Samaniego, siblings who represent the present of Bodegas Ostatu. They took the reins of the project that their parents started in the 1970s, doing so with enthusiasm, vision for the future, perseverance, and passion for the land where they were born and grew up.
Located in Samaniego, Ostatu has set itself apart because of its good work and because it is a true reflection of the different terroirs that make up this small town in the Rioja Alavesa region. At Ostatu, they have been implementing ecological techniques in vineyard cultivation for decades – techniques which extend to the rest of the processes at the winery.
In fact, two lines of wine are produced by Ostatu: those with a more traditional profile which define the identity, location, and character of the Samaniego vineyard –such as Ostatu Tinto Red Wine (carbonic maceration), Ostatu Blanco White Wine, Ostatu Rosé, Ostatu Crianza, Ostatu Reserva, and Ostatu Gran Reserva– and a second profile featuring terroir wines, unique productions that represent the most significant winegrowing plots and in which the unique nature of each and every vintage leaves the mark of its personality. These wines include Lore de Ostatu, Valdepedro de Ostatu, Escobal de Ostatu, Selección de Ostatu, Laderas de Ostatu, and Gloria de Ostatu.
Ostatu, which is Basque for the word “accommodation,” has been an inn since its construction several centuries ago – a place of passage for muleteers, carts, and horses and a space for the sale of wine. That fact has filled the Sáenz de Samaniego family with hospitable charm, having converted the historic house in which they lived into exclusive apartments which share space with the place where the wines are made and stored.
La Venta de Ostatu is brimming with the traditional essence of this family. The apartments, which enjoy views of the Rioja Alavesa vineyards, glean inspiration from an environment that was declared a Basque Country Cultural Heritage Site, situated under the watchful gaze and protection of the Sierra de Cantabria and Sierra del Toloño Mountain Ranges to the north. Ostatu’s intention is for the visitor to connect with the region, to feel part of it, to be inspired, and to relax in a natural environment that transmits peace and serenity – all with the vineyard and wine as the common thread.
