In Samaniego, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region, a glass box emerges from the ground to reveal a winery whose entire structure is harmoniously tucked below the surface, on seven underground floors. This is Bodegas Baigorri, exceptionally located at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria Mountain Range and surrounded by a sea of vineyards.
The winery, designed and built by architect Iñaki Aspiazu and inaugurated in 2002, is a leader in sustainability and modern architecture that integrates into the landscape, respecting the environment where it is located. The design is guided by the winemaking process, with Baigorri seeking to achieve the highest quality in terms of its wines by returning to traditional systems and recovering gravity as its main ally.
The grapes are cultivated in a sustainable way, in harmony with nature. They grow on old vines, deeply rooted in the area’s land and culture. They are harvested by hand and processed in the most delicate way possible to transform the genuine flavor of nature into wine.
The wines reflect the soil, climate, and tradition of the Rioja Alavesa region. With its extensive range, Bodegas Baigorri seeks to offer the uniqueness of each variety and terroir in every glass. From its more classic range to its Estate Collection and most limited productions, all Baigorri wines are made with passion and utmost care in order to achieve excellence.
The winery’s facilities are key in surprising and captivating visitors, as they are unique and pioneering in that the wine is produced in all phases by gravity, with the winery being an open space without walls that allows for observation of the entire process. Visitors come at any time of the year –especially during the harvest time– to experience wine making in an educational way at an avant-garde establishment. As a complement to the guided tour, different options are offered to allow visitors to discover the uniqueness of the area by tasting its wines.
As a final touch to the visit, the winery’s restaurant located on the sixth underground floor is a pleasant surprise. It is a place to be enjoyed, with views of the vineyards and the barrel room, where chef Maite Barruti has designed a culinary offer featuring local and seasonal ingredients. A six-course delight (three appetizers, a starter, a main course, and a dessert) that is updated monthly and is served accompanied by wines from the winery. A journey of flavors in one of the essential destinations for foodies.
