The Basque Country has a presence on the global art scene that is considerably greater than could be expected based on our physical and demographic size, which are both small. Our presence is above what would correspond to us.
This presence has been strengthened over the last two decades by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It must be considered that in any given year prior to the pandemic, more than a million people from all over the world came to our region attracted by its cultural activity.
In addition to that, there is a long-standing tradition here of creators and artists on a level that is much greater than our size. In both the last generation and this generation, there has been a number of quality Basque artists who are at the highest level in their fields – a number which is disproportionate to our size as a region.
