My relationship with the Basque Country goes back a long way. In fact, as a child I lived in Bilbao and, at just eight years of age, I began painting. Also at that age, I discovered the interiors of the homes of Bilbao´s bourgeoisie, as well as those of the elite Neguri district. It was a natural learning process, the result of curiosity and experimentation.
The light, the landscape, and the power of the Basque Country also shaped my perspective: I learned to perceive spaces with respect for the environment, and their history was part of my upbringing since childhood. The curiosity and sensitivity that those years awakened taught me to look closely, to find inspiration in the everyday and the unexpected, and —over time— they became guiding lights for my career.
Those interiors were carefully curated spaces, full of details and unique pieces… steeped in history and vision. Today, spaces have evolved: designing a hotel is not the same as designing a home. Even so, whatever the use may be, when designing a high-end space, one thing that cannot be missing is good judgment. One can use fine materials, of course, but also proportion, silence, balance…
That is why I believe that luxury resides not in what is most dazzling, but in what endures — in distinguishing oneself without forsaking comfort and harmony. That each space tells its own story —to watch people inhabit it, make it theirs, and weave their lives into its design— is what makes every effort worthwhile.
