Luxury is synonymous to excellence. It is often confused with having a Ferrari, a piece of jewelry by Cartier, or a haute couture suit… but that is not it. A luxury item is an excellent product, and although we can also be speaking of a piece of jewelry, I prefer to think of, for example, a fantastic cheese, some shoes, a bag, any product from the gastronomic sector, or a work of art.
When I created the Association, I called it Luxury Spain, because I wanted to bring together several excellent companies – luxury companies. In Spain, luxury has the connotation of something that shines, that is ostentatious – and that is not the case. At the Association, we have different categories like gastronomy, leather goods, beauty, the art of living, etc. and in each space one can find truly excellent products which have nothing to do with ostentation but instead with a job well done.
This definition of excellence can be applied to the Basque Country – and that affirmation is true for many reasons, starting with the beauty of the landscape (which is impressive) and the quality of life. People live wonderfully, in luxury homes. Although it is true that not everyone has the same possibilities, the Basque live in a kind of luxury. A cultural mix can be seen –a unique way of living– that impacts me a lot when I visit the region.
