In the north of Navarre, just a little more than half an hour from San Sebastian, in a natural setting of extreme beauty and surrounded by lush forests, the Basajaun Basoa Deluxe Cottages can be found. The name makes reference to the character from Basque mythology of prodigious size and strength who dwelt in the Irati Forest – the keeper of the secrets of architecture, agriculture, metal forging, and a sedentary life. Basajaun protected the flocks of sheep in the same way that they now protect the cottages, as they are surrounded by a lush, green meadow where animals graze. To lodge here is to live in harmony with nature, as the cottages’ immense picture windows help to bring the landscape inside.
The twelve cottages, which offer complete privacy, are equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, living/dining room, terrace, air conditioning, Wi-Fi internet, and private parking. They are noted for their warm, contemporary decor. In two of them can sleep four guests, while the ten larger ones can be occupied by up to six people and are an ideal option for large families. The location of the cottages is another of the reasons why so many people from all over the world decide to visit Basajaun Basoa, as they are found inside the IrriSarri Land Adventure Park, in the most secluded and quiet part of the resort. The park can be reached easily by road and even by helicopter, as it features its own heliport. The outdoor activity options for both young and old are endless: pendular jumping, zip lines, high rope courses, laser tag, a bike park, horseback riding, and Segway paths through the forest, amongst other activities. Guests can even bring their own horses to ride through IrriSarri Land.
The resort likewise has the Palacio de Yrisarri panoramic restaurant, located in a stately house from the sixteenth century which offers splendid views of the Izu, Pagolleta, and Beltzutza Mountains. The menu, created by chef Teresa Gil, gives special importance to seasonal products, being highlighted by the delicious flavors of the vegetables and meats of Navarre – traditional recipes with a certain avant-garde flair.
Some of the Deluxe Cottage guests even say they’ve seen Basajaun himself amongst the trees. Who knows. What we do know is that the forest holds infinite secrets, and some of them only reveal themselves under the starlight. If you hear the sound of the bells ringing in unison, then you know that the Lord of the Forest is near.
