Bodegas Baigorri is located in Samaniego, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria Mountain Range, in a unique part of the Rioja Alavesa region that can be enjoyed from a glass viewing point. The winery, a champion of sustainability, offers tours of its facilities throughout the year. In these tours, they explain their unique way of making wine using gravity. They also have a highly recommended restaurant that serves a seasonal tasting menu featuring local ingredients accompanied by beverages from the winery itself.
Baigorri’s commitment to sustainability began when the project was created in 1998, when the architectural plans were developed with the aim of integrating the winery into the rural environment. In this way, the winery was able to mitigate its environmental impact in the area where it is located, with the building adapting to the existing topography and manufacturing being undertaken underground – always adopting a submissive and respectful position towards the environment that acts as its gracious host. Being partly below ground level, the winery has a natural system for maintaining both temperature and humidity and this in turn allows for reduced electricity consumption, as climate control systems are less needed in the different rooms. Baigorri also promotes the use of all the byproducts generated in wine production while sustainably undertaking their work in the vineyard.
All of this winery’s actions revolve around the quest for the lowest possible environmental impact and minimal resource use. What is more, this is a winery committed to innovation and research, always in search of continued improvement. Many projects have come and gone over the years, and all of them have converged on the path that this winemaking establishment has always sought out: to be one of the best companies not in the world, but for the world.
Thus, seeking to strengthen its commitment to society and the planet, in 2024 Bodegas Baigorri confirmed its adhesion to the B Corp Community. Baigorri is one of the first wineries in Spain to join this global movement which has a presence on five continents and is made up of companies from all over the world. The movement’s firm objective is to contribute to daily improvement by reducing inequality, respecting the environment, strengthening communities, and creating high-quality jobs that provide people with a sense of dignity and purpose.
For more than two decades, Baigorri has been championing a way of acting based on ongoing improvement, taking the environment as a whole into account, recovering the biodiversity of ecosystems, and promoting sustainable options and practices amongst consumers, clients, and teams. The owners point out: “For Baigorri, being a B Corp has involved –and continues to involve– a long evaluation process with high social and environmental standards; it is not a one-off change, but rather a way of being and doing things through a process of constant observation and transformation, based on continuous improvement, which has been part of our project’s genetic makeup from the very beginning, with the winery constantly strengthening its commitment to contribute positively to its surroundings.”
They go on to say, “B Corp certification, together with our Fair’N Green accreditation for sustainable viticulture, consciously places sustainability and continuous improvement as cross-cutting pillars throughout our entire value chain. Baigorri is written with a “B” for “benefit for all,” because we have all opted for innovation in order to work with coherence, respect, and integrity from a holistic point of view towards wine, to give each small plot back its innate value, offering the most original and expressive version of our products; it’s about recovering the richness of the environment… enhancing traditional knowledge by reappraising the work of our community.”
