Atlantis is a boutique in San Sebastián that all fashion lovers must visit while in the Basque Country. Specializing in accessories, jewelry, and high-end bijou pieces, its owner, Elisabeth Múgica, visits numerous European trade fairs each year to select items of character with a nostalgic feel and which are reminiscent of the Belle Époque. Among the shop’s latest additions are baroque-style jewelry produced by hand in Florence, fantasy bijou pieces from the maison Gas Bijoux of Marseille, gloves with print designs produced in Grenoble by Brokante, and Parisian hats by Céline Robert.
Atlantis also works with large firms of prestige, such as Etro, Missoni, Christian Lacroix, Moschino, Emanuel Ungaro, Elie Saab, and Leonard, as well as other select brands like Coolook of Spain and Pestelli, Mantero, and Pellini of Italy.
In addition to pieces made by reputable firms and some accessories manufactured in the Basque Country (like handmade gloves produced in Bilbao from Spanish sheepskin and with mink inlays), Atlantis offers a personalized bag and hat design service inside the boutique itself, fruit of the work of Gill Connon, a Scottish national who has made San Sebastián her home and who has extensive experience in the fashion and theatrical costume sectors. She makes all hats by hand –from the structure right down to the smallest detail– using nets, mesh, and dried flowers from England, France, Spain, and Italy, as well as the feathers of pheasants, ducks, and peacocks imported from the USA. She is able to get any color her customers desire by means of special dyes that she applies to the hat’s structure and its decorative elements. Her bags are made with base materials that include raffia palm, silk, string, velvet, and sinamay; semi-precious stones and ornamental elements are subsequently inlaid therein.
But a special nostalgic feel is not only transmitted through fashion but also through aroma. With that basic tenet in mind, Atlantis provides high-quality niche perfumes whose fragrances are nothing like the commercial eau de cologne varieties. In addition to the elegant fragrances by Anna Rivka and Les Néréides, which the boutique has worked with for years, the Grands Crus Collection is now also available – a collection by Berdoues, the iconic French maison founded in 1902. This selection of eau de parfum will take you on a journey through different parts of the world discovering scents with exotic ingredients like perilla frutescens from Japan, Jasminum sembac from India, tobacco from Turkey, Jamaica pepper, and vetiver from Haiti. With these painstakingly selected scents and artisanal accessories, Atlantis transports its clients to a world of fantasy, a time that oscillates between the Belle Époque and modern life.
