An androgynous-looking bust in Carrara marble, considered the best in the world, is the latest creation of Joseba Lekuona Yaben. He is a craftsman who specializes in stonework and has been trained in ancient techniques as applied to stone. Since 2006, Joseba has also been the director of Hartea, a firm that creates stone plates and structures using traditional manufacturing methods.
The characteristic feature of this bust, for which a classic material has been worked via a traditional method, is its functionality. This is because the figure is divided into different parts that form a complete set of tableware. Thus, diners can take all the pieces from the head and use them as plates. Due to the weight of the materials used, every single millimeter has been carved to follow the shape of one’s fingers, the palm of one’s hand, and natural movements – thus making the pieces easier to be enjoyed by diners.
This bust is the latest of many tableware designs created by Hartea, but it is the first to be anthropomorphic in appearance. The pieces that he usually manufactures follow two different lines of style: those that maintain the external shape of the stone, with a rough and rugged texture; and those that are cylinders, worked until achieving a perfect geometric design and a smooth texture.
The originality of these pieces, the durability of the materials used (marble, sandstone, limestone, volcanic stone, and basalt), and the manual technique used all make these tableware sets true collector’s items for any lover of good cuisine.
