Beyond experiencing culture in museums, galleries, and the urban landscape, Gipuzkoa invites visitors to step inside the numerous artists’ workshops that open their doors to the public. These spaces offer the opportunity to witness the creative process up close and explore the working methods used to shape each piece of art. Among the most remarkable of these spaces is Chillida Lantoki in Legazpi — an old paper mill turned into a museum that reveals sculptor Eduardo Chillida’s profound connection with the industrial world, particularly with the Patricio Echeverría forge and the Sidenor steelworks, where some of his most emblematic pieces took form.
In Usurbil, Zumeta Arte Estudioa can be found — a unique two-story building surrounded by nature, dedicated to preserving and sharing the legacy of artist Jose Luis Zumeta. The visit unfolds through three areas: the painting atelier, the silkscreen studio where he produced his graphic works, and an exhibition hall showcasing his oil and tempera paintings.
Ur Mara, in Alkiza, is a natural haven dedicated to cultural dissemination and founded by sculptor Koldobika Jauregi and his partner Elena Cajaraville. In addition to its permanent exhibition (featuring pieces bequeathed by the multifaceted artist), each year it hosts an extensive program in which art, philosophy, and nature converse, creating vibrant networks and communities of shared inspiration.
In San Sebastián, Balliache Espacio Arte is home to the studio of Basque/Venezuelan artist Miguel Balliache, a creative hub designed to nurture artistic exploration through workshops and classes in painting, ceramics, and the visual arts.
Meanwhile, in Zarautz, Iñigo Manterola also opens the doors of his studio to visitors by appointment. The impressive two-story space brings together his painting atelier, sculpture workshop, and exhibition area where collectors can discover his latest creations. To meet a creator like Manterola in the very place where his ideas take shape is a true privilege — and a reminder of how exceptional it is when artists of such caliber share, with great generosity, the most intimate side of their world.
