Wood as a way of life; this is how one could define the master craftsmen at Abian Products who manufacture surfboards, longboards, cruisers, surf-skates, wobble boards, and even balance boards using a traditional process in their small, family workshop located in Zarautz.
With their brand name Abian, two young people –passionate about sports on wheels, waves, and on any other surface– have managed to create an exceptional name for themselves, making use of wood, the common thread in all of their creations, and only employing materials that fully respect the environment. Paulownia wood (of Chinese origin) and natural, fine-gauge silica sand are just some of the materials that they work with. The decision to not use harmful substances takes Abian towards a clear commitment to the protection of the environment, thus creating a philosophy and character that the company aims to project from Zarautz to the entire world.
The master craftsmen at Abian are able to make any wood product that one can imagine. All of their items, some of which are for sale on their website, are devised in the workshop where their showroom is located – the place where they turn their ideas into magic. As far as their surfboards go, their aim is to get back to the sport’s roots –a sport that originated in Polynesia– in order to offer their customers a different way of surfing and feeling the waves.
Last year, their brand was present at one of Spain’s leading water sport and beach lifestyle events, the Salinas International Longboard Festival, which was in its seventeenth year. The company was in charge of designing and awarding the championship prizes.
The brand has managed to successfully integrate itself as part of Basque landscape, manufacturing water and land items that perfectly fit with the unparalleled surfing coast and the long beach boardwalks.
At Abian, a strong commitment has been made to bring the benefits of wood to even the little ones of the family, and the company defines some of their pieces as educational in nature. The different types of boards they offer can be used by both children and adults alike as a way to learn and have fun, encouraging creativity and promoting a sense of balance. Those who form part of this company can be described in no other way than craftsmen who live from, and give life to, the wood with which they work.
