“Mens sana in corpore sano” is a philosophy that we have deeply internalized today. What few know is that in reality this phrase by poet Decimus Junius Juvenalis is incomplete. The original sentence said “orandum est ut sit mens sana in corpore sano”, which can be translated as “let us pray for a healthy mind in a healthy body.” The phrase in question, which was originally satire, has passed through numerous hands throughout history, until reaching our days as a vindication of the importance of keeping an active life. The Arrizul Congress Hotel of San Sebastián is a patron of this idea and encourages its guests to enrich their stay by doing outdoor activities: renting bicycles at the reception desk (San Sebastián has 65 km of bike lanes) or surfing at the Zurriola Beach, which is located a few steps from the establishment (Zurriola is the beach with the liveliest waves in the city and many surfing and bodyboarding competitions are held there). In fact, the hotel has a facility by the sea for storing surf equipment. On rainy days, guests can continue working out in the hotel’s gym.
Good food is another pillar of healthy living. Therefore, at Arrizul Congress they serve up personalized breakfasts which include hot dishes prepared with excellent quality local ingredients. Some evenings, the hotel invites its guests to pair local wines and ciders with typical products like cheeses, anchovies, and the famous Gildas (a typical local “pintxo” featuring olives, anchovies, and chili peppers).
Thanks to this combination of good food and a wide range of activities, Arrizul Congress has become one of the favorite hotels of MICE travelers (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions). Its privileged location next to the Kursaal Convention Center and the services it offers (a meeting room, Wi-Fi, courtesy minibar, free coffee corner, and private parking) have also helped its positioning.
The success achieved by Arrizul Congress has led its owners to want to expand, opening a new 39-room hotel in the center of San Sebastián: Arrizul Catedral.
