Every visit to the Anhelo Boutique in San Sebastián is an olfactory discovery. Their perfumery section adds new niche brands annually that bring sophisticated international fragrances to the city. Their latest inclusions are Rose et Marius, Carlotha Ray, Rancé, Lesquendieu, Nissaba, and Parfum d’Empire.
Created by Magali Fleurquin-Bonnard, Rose et Marius is the only Provence-based maison classified as haute perfumery: the excellence of the brand’s Mediterranean aromas lies in the ingredients they use and the careful elaboration of their products. The visual aspect of the firm also stands out, inspired by the hydraulic tiles that Magali’s grandmother had at her Provençal estate. In addition to these perfumes, the firm also develops body and home products, all manufactured in Aix-en-Provence.
Behind the Carlotha Ray perfume and shoe brand is Mariela Schwarz Montiel. The brand’s refreshing vegan eau de parfum, with floral and woody aromas, is made from 90% natural ingredients, free of chemicals, and features organic plant-based alcohol. The products’ bottles are made from 40% recycled glass, and the lids are made from PEFC-certified beech.
Rancé was Napoleon Bonaparte’s favorite perfumer. The maison was founded in 1795 in Grasse, and in 1902 it moved to Milan. Today, the seventh generation of the same family is at the helm of the company. Their varieties of eaux de toilette are of exceptional quality, highly fragrant and refreshing at the same time, and feature names as suggestive as Eau de France, Eau de la Couronne, and Rêve d´Eté.
In 1903, Joseph Lesquendieu created his perfumery in Paris and it was active until the 1970s. Since 2015, his grandson Jérôme has taken up the reins; on the one hand, he has continued with the historic perfumes created by his grandfather (Glorilis, Lilice, and Feu de Bengale) and, on the other, he has started with the oriental perfumes that he designed himself. They are all examples of eau de parfum made with top quality ingredients, and their cases feature gold foil print and the cap is 24k gold plated. With a very refined look, Lesquendieu offers tradition, luxury, and modernity in a single bottle.
Nissaba is a Swiss perfumery created by Sébastien Tissot – a man who, after a long career with the Firmenich Group, decided to create a eau de parfum brand with natural ingredients of exceptional quality, backed by a sincere commitment and rigorous ethics when it comes to conceiving and producing fragrances. Without any limits to its creativity, the firm’s seven fragrances are a unique olfactory experience inspired by seven places on Earth (Paraguay, Madagascar, Indonesia, Guatemala, and Provence, among others), where the brand contributes to the local economy, sustainability, and professionalism in the sector. Nissaba’s transparent bottle with organic shapes is a visual and olfactory luxury.
Parfum d´Empire is a brand that makes eau de parfum and candles from Corsica. Marc-Antoine Corticchiato heads up this company, which extracts the maximum potential from plants to offer inspiring fragrances that transport one to Corsica and the Mediterranean, all with carefully studied aromas.
But Anhelo is much more than a perfumery; it is a brand created 21 years ago which offers high-end bijou pieces and hats that are handcrafted and made to order in its own workshop (the boutique’s porcelain and wax headpieces are particularly noteworthy). In addition, the shop sells accessories and complements from other brands, as well as cosmetics, and they have a salon dedicated exclusively to beauty treatments with a menu that includes makeup, manicure, and pedicure services, facial hair removal, eyebrow design, facial treatments, lash lifting, and brow tinting. A true “must” in San Sebastián.
