Akelaŕe: The Michelin Guide awarded two Michelin Keys to the Akelaŕe Hotel, highlighting its commitment to bringing the art of hospitality to the highest possible level
In 2024, the Michelin Guide introduced a new distinction meant to highlight accommodation options that take the art of hospitality to the highest level, thus contributing to creating unique experiences: the Michelin Key. In the first edition in Spain, 97 hotel establishments obtained said recognition, only twelve of which were awarded two Michelin Keys. Among those establishments is the Akelaŕe Hotel of San Sebastián, which is part of the Relais & Châteaux association of individually owned and operated hotels.
Michelin’s prestige as one of the most prominent authorities in the culinary sector highlights the importance of this recognition for Akelaŕe, which has become the only establishment in the Basque Country to be awarded two Michelin Keys for the hotel and three Michelin Stars for its restaurant.
Founded in 1970, Akelaŕe Restaurant has received numerous awards for its culinary excellence over the years. In 2017, Chef Pedro Subijana took a bold step by opening the hotel, thus becoming one of the few three-Michelin-starred restaurants in the world to have its own five-star lodge. In collaboration with the architectural studio Mecanismo, Akelaŕe was designed and built with a meticulous focus on its harmonious integration into the surrounding environment. Excellence in the selection of ingredients –one of the characteristics that sets the restaurant apart– is also reflected in the hotel, where a warm and welcoming atmosphere has been created using natural materials that intertwine with the natural beauty of the Basque coast.
At Akelaŕe, the sea is the common thread that unites all the spaces. In its 22 elegant rooms and suites, its 800 m2 spa and wellness area, and its gastronomic spaces, the horizon is always present. In addition to the three-star restaurant, the hotel also has Espazio Oteiza, an eatery that invites diners to enjoy a more informal à la carte culinary proposal (as well as magnificent signature cocktails) while seated in one of its impressive terraces facing the Cantabrian Sea (in all, the establishment has 1,400 m2 of terrace to choose from).
