The Guggenheim Museum’s inauguration marked a turning point for Bilbao and for all the Basque Country. The city became one of the great capitals of art, visited by millions of tourists from around the world. A museum of such importance required a hotel that would be on par with its famous art gallery. Thus, the Gran Hotel Domine came into being. Created by Javier Mariscal and Fernando Salas, the hotel has always presented itself from the time it opened as being in a type of dialog with the Guggenheim Museum. One facing the other, both buildings interact, with design being their common denominator.
In 2018, the hotel underwent a total remodel, opening new spaces that have positioned it as the leading luxury hotel of Bilbao’s Art District. Under the watchful eye of the famous “Puppy” by Jeff Koons, Le Café can be found – a restaurant that features urban cuisine. The Beltz restaurant delights the most demanding palates with seasonal cuisine rooted in Basque culture but with an international influence. Lovers of rooftop bars also can find their niche at the Domine, as the roof is crowned with the best terrace of the city – “La Terraza.” It’s a spectacular place where you can enjoy informal snacks or a delicious cocktail with 180º views of the estuary and the architectural complex that surrounds it, including Deusto University, from the nineteenth century, and Iberdrola Tower, the highest skyscraper of the Basque Country, built by the architect who designed the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, César Pelli. The last cocktails of the night can be had in the newly opened Sixty-One Lobby Bar, a cosmopolitan space featuring leather, stainless steel, velvet, and marble décor to transport us to the atmosphere of the chicest bars of London and New York.
Wellness by Domine has been yet another new addition to the hotel – a temple that caters to bodily well-being and features a Turkish bath, relaxation area, sauna, gymnasium, and facial and body treatment rooms. Furnished with pieces created by Frank Gehry himself, the spa –just like the hotel’s other spaces– enters into a dialog with the Guggenheim Museum, making it the 5-star establishment par excellence for those who love art and design.
