“María Cristina Hotel: From Elegance to Splendor.” That was the headline the press used to describe the recent renovation of the main halls at San Sebastián’s iconic María Cristina Hotel. The project, signed by architects Gabriel Asuar and Daniel Ballesteros —of Flexo Arquitectos— was developed in collaboration with renowned artist Víctor Goikoetxea.
The hotel’s gallery has been adorned with Carrara and Bardiglio marble, featuring a meticulous design that reaches its highest expression in a grand central floor medallion, where the hotel’s golden monogram becomes the focal point of a composition defined by refined symmetry. This pursuit of aesthetic excellence continues into the halls, where the rug Los susurros del bosque (“Whispers of the Forest”), a unique creation conceived especially for the project, transcends traditional patterns to evoke the beauty of nature. The renovation restores the original splendor and sophistication of the Belle Époque, establishing a dialogue between history and modernity that enhances the hotel’s distinctive identity.
Beyond their work in the restoration of classical spaces, the studio embraces a profoundly contemporary vision. In the residential sphere, Flexo Arquitectos has developed distinctive high-end homes in privileged locations such as the slopes of Igeldo, where the immensity of the Cantabrian Sea becomes the undisputed protagonist of villas offering an exceptional living experience.
