Iñigo Manterola: Strokes that Turn Symbols into Art
In his most recent series, Basque Treasures, artist Iñigo Manterola continues to explore movement from a fresh perspective. Through energetic and seemingly spontaneous brushstrokes, he depicts places, buildings, objects, and urban fixtures that, over time, have become symbols of the Basque Country. Notable examples include the txapela (traditional Basque beret) and various icons of the city of San Sebastián, such as Santa Clara Island, the Art Deco streetlamps designed by Víctor Arana that illuminate the Zurriola Bridge, and the monumental obelisks crowned by sculptures which guard the María Cristina Bridge.
Works from the Basque Treasures series can be seen at the gallery the artist has in central San Sebastián, as well as in his studio in Zarautz. This latter space, spread over two floors, includes a painting atelier, a workshop where he shapes small- and medium-scale sculptures, and an exhibition hall open to the public (by appointment) where numerous events are held, many of which combine gastronomy and art — among other combinations. Here, his Basque Treasures coexist with his impeccable sea-themed work, his iconic weathering steel sculptures, and paintings from other series that have shaped his creative universe — always revolving around two central themes: movement and the sea.
