In Gipuzkoa, a passion for sport intertwines with the beauty of the landscape and the identity of each and every corner. Throughout the year, this territory hosts a number of events that not only attract athletes from around the world but also reveal the spirit of every region. From the coast to inland, from rugged mountain trails to city streets, each competition becomes a celebration of effort and nature.
San Sebastián shines in its own athletic light. The city becomes a moving festival each year, hosting the popular Lilatón Womens’ Race in February, the Half Marathon in April, and the Zurich San Sebastián Marathon in November. Other events travel through different regions, finishing in the capital — such as the Donostia–Baiona–Donostia Cycling Tour in May, and the iconic Behobia–San Sebastián, which brings together over 25,000 participants every November.
In Goierri (the Basque Highlands), trail running and cycling reach legendary heights. May brings the world-famous Zegama-Aizkorri, July the demanding Ehunmila (a 168-kilometer challenge), followed by the Axari Trail of Idiazabal in September and the Txirrindularia–La Ciclista in October, completing a calendar of mountain grit and passion.
Beterri–Buruntza invites cyclists to roll through green paths. April features the classic Lasarte-Oria MTB, while May’s Laba Gravel in Andoain winds through the scenic Leitzaran Valley.
In Debagoiena, tradition and running merge. The Ahuntzen Mendi Lasterketa in Elgeta and the Mondran Bike–MTB Martxa in Arrasate (held in March and May, respectively) offer intense, immersive ways to experience the valleys.
The Bidasoa not only serves as the starting point for the Behobia–San Sebastián, but it also is the stage for two beloved November races: the Bidasoa Half Marathon, linking Hondarribia and Irun, and the Donibane Lohizune–Hondarribia Half Marathon, which starts in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and finishes in Hondarribia.
Urola Erdia breathes the spirit of long-distance running. In March, the Azkoitia–Azpeitia Half Marathon, held in memory of Diego García, takes place; in May, the Domusa Teknik 40 MLK traverses the region in a true test of ultra endurance.
Debabarrena opens the sporting year in January with the prestigious Juan Muguerza Cross-Country Race in Elgoibar. In April, Eibar hosts the Basque Challenge, while September closes with the Flysch Beltza Swimming Race from Deba to Mutriku.
In Tolosaldea, every step rises toward the peaks. May brings the Txindokiko Kilometro Bertikala in Abaltzisketa; in June, Tolosako Hiru Tontorrak departs from Tolosa to conquer Mounts Ernio, Uzturre, and Erroizpe; and in September, the Tolosaldea Ultratrail Erronka departs from Irura, crowning over eleven legendary summits.
In Oarsoaldea, the season begins in February with the Lezo–Jaizkibel Mountain Race, only to continue in May with the Landarbaso Trail in Errenteria and culminate in June with the Intxixu Trail in Oiartzun.
In Urola Garaia, May is the month of the Iñaki Beitia Memorial March. Legazpi celebrates both the Xabier Ortiz MTB in May and the Korosti Trail in October.
Finally, Urola Kosta turns summer into a celebration of athleticism by land and sea: June features the Zarautz Triathlon while July’s Getaria–Zarautz Swim Crossing combines maritime tradition and daring athletic spirit.
