Evocative and stylish. Villa Magalean is a boutique hotel located in Hondarribia that opened its doors in 2017 and, in just a few short years, has become a leading luxury hotel in the Basque Country. The lodge’s owners, with the help of interior designer Iñaki Biurrun, transformed a 1950s Neo-Basque style villa located at the mouth of the Bidasoa River into this welcoming space; an eight-room boutique hotel with a spa, an establishment which combines Art Deco and contemporary style. The decoration is a journey through the best creative workshops in Europe. Furthermore, the hotel’s look is the result of a quest for traditional objects – testaments to the region’s customs and traditions which have been acquired at important auctions and flea markets. The end result is both surprising and comforting, with furnishings and accessories drawing from a variety of influences: timeless furniture by the Dutch firm Eichholtz; lamps with a touch of fantasy by the Italian Karman Lights; subdued contemporary furniture of great beauty from the Belgian XVL Collection; high-quality wool, linen, and velvet fabrics from the English firm Holland & Sherry; exclusive handmade pieces by the Italian company C & C Milano; and porcelain objects by the iconic Spanish brand Lladró and by the French Haviland, one of the latest porcelain maisons from Limoges.
One of the strong points of Villa Magalean is its spa. Its name –Henriette– pays tribute to the first beautician in Hondarribia. The spa, where guests can enjoy a circuit full of sensations and the most exclusive facial and body treatments, is guaranteed by the prestigious French cosmetics firm Cinq Mondes; a true luxury, as this is one of the few Spanish hotel spas that are associated with said brand. In addition to the aforementioned sophisticated treatments, there are also precise therapeutic options featuring the technology of LPG and Indiba® which act upon the body and face and yield results from the very first session. Henriette is not a spa reserved for the exclusive use of hotel guests. In fact, it is open to the general public.
Spaces like the Albertine reading room invite guests to have a few hours of peace and quiet thanks to the fireplace and library with an exquisite collection of well-curated masterpieces by Spanish, French, and Anglo-Saxon authors.
After satisfying their intellectual appetite, guests typically end up succumbing to the oenological temptations of the wine bar on the hotel’s garden terrace – a space which, in this case, is reserved exclusively for guests staying at the establishment. Here a carefully selected list of top wines and champagnes awaits: Château Angélus 1988 1er Grand Cru Classé A, Château d’Yquem 1999 1er Cru Superior 1855, Único 2013, Trasnocho 2011, Dom Pérignon 2008, and Cristal Roederer 2009 – among other delights.
The name Villa Magalean comes from the word magal, which in Basque means “lap,” “skirt,” “shelter.” It’s a name that is as well chosen as each of the details that turn this hotel into a unique space whose owners and management are completely dedicated to their guests’ wellbeing. And the fact of the matter is that this hotel offers guests the best of two worlds: the warmth of a large family home and hotel services of the highest possible level.
