The town of Getaria is known for its restaurants specializing in grilled fish and for being the birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano and Cristóbal Balenciaga, but it is especially famous for its picturesque landscape formed by vineyards made up of the Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Beltza grape varieties, from which txakoli is made. Among these hills covered with vineyards stands the most beautiful hotel in Getaria: Iturregi.
This eight-room luxury accommodation option is located on an extensive estate with a garden, a lake, and wooded areas, giving it great privacy. It has an outdoor swimming pool, solarium, a lounge with an honesty bar, a glazed porch from which one can admire the sunsets, an indoor dining room with sea views, a wine cellar with an impeccable collection of wines, a terrace where guests can enjoy breakfast, a garden with sculptures, and a helipad.
In recent years, Iturregi has been working on a new project to bring the culture of txakoli closer to its guests, and in 2024 it presented the result of years of effort: the firm produced its own txakoli, included in the Getariako Txakolina Designation of Origin. These are two high-quality white wines –Txakoli Iturregi and Iturregi Bizkarraga– which have caught the attention of renowned winemakers and have been added to the menus of prominent restaurants like Nobu San Sebastián, Narru, and the Martín Berasategui Restaurant, which has three Michelin Stars.
The first variety, featuring 100% Hondarribi Zuri grapes, comes from a vineyard in Zumaia which measures 12,900 m2 and has great qualitative potential as it faces southeast and uses a trellis system. Manual selection is undertaken of only the clusters of grapes that meet the strictest quality parameters, with the 2022 vintage seeing limited production of less than 2,638 bottles. This wine features the characteristics that one expects from a Txakoli from Getaria, but with greater complexity and elegance. On the palate, this txakoli wine reveals its high-end lineage, offering a freshness that is typical of the Hondarrabi Zuri grape variety, enriched with a rounder and softer texture thanks to sur lie aging. Its acidity is moderate, with a tannic touch that provides character, achieving the perfect balance between body and freshness.
With a limited edition of 1,150 bottles, Iturregi Bizkarraga is a local wine harvested by hand at a small, century-old vineyard that was recovered in 2020, located in a privileged setting just a few meters from the sea on a south-facing plot with calcareous soil. Thanks to 396 pre-phylloxera Hondarribi Zuri grape vines (ungrafted), they obtain a wine for aging that combines elegance, tension, fresh fruit, and verticality. This is the Iturregi team’s biggest commitment to making a high-end txakoli, aiming to explore the qualitative potential of the area while respecting the unique character of the local grape as much as possible and acting thereon as little as possible in the winemaking process itself.
Guests staying at Iturregi will now have the opportunity to taste these unique txakolis made with a love for good work, a passion for great wines, and a commitment to high-quality viticulture.
