Sea. Blue sea, intense sea, endless sea. That is the commanding view that guests staying at the Akelaŕe Ocean Suite have. Located on the slopes of Mount Igueldo in San Sebastián, the Akelaŕe Hotel, a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux Association, presents this extraordinary suite in which each and every room faces the vast blue sea.
Featuring neutral tones and natural materials –like wood and slate– and refined decoration, the Akelaŕe Ocean Suite has a large central space comprised of the living area and the bedroom. Equipped with top-of-the-line furnishings, a king-sized bed, a complimentary Nespresso coffee machine (along with other surprises) and a Bang & Olufsen television system complete with Apple TV, this bedroom has direct access to a furnished terrace from which guests can view the manicured hotel garden, the bucolic countryside that extends to the shore, and –once more– the sea.
Passing by the spacious closet and dressing area, we reach the bathroom, which has a double sink, a rain shower, a free-standing bathtub next to the window, and 100% natural bathroom amenities.
But what characterizes this suite, and what makes it unique (there is no other hotel in the Basque Country that offers this) is the fact that it has a 5.5 m2 indoor/outdoor heated pool for the exclusive use of the guests of this room. This infinity pool enters into a dialog with the ocean and invites the lucky ones staying here to immerse themselves in a life experience in which everything revolves around the sea.
The à la carte breakfast deserves special mention, always included with accommodation and dreamed up by one of the most renowned chefs in the world: Pedro Subijana, bearer of three Michelin Stars for his restaurant Akelaŕe, located in the same complex and the place where this delectable dream got its start. This prestigious standard bearer of our gastronomy was also named Ambassador for Sustainable Tourism by the World Tourism Organization at the Eighth World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism held last October in San Sebastián. Hake in seaweed steam with plankton and oyster leaf, cabbage chessboard and Iberian pork belly with an intense and spicy reduction of pig trotters, and carved beef with a mushroom roll, apple sauce, and mead are some of the creations that are served in his gastronomic restaurant.
Also included with the stay is access to the wellness area, equipped with a relaxation pool, dry and wet sauna, and panoramic relaxation area that, once again, serves as an unparalleled balcony to the Cantabrian Sea. In this space dedicated to relaxation, guests can also discover and enjoy the exclusive treatments and massages, all of which feature the prestigious beauty brand Valmont.
To round out the experience, the hotel has an à la carte restaurant (also run by Pedro Subijana) called Espazio Oteiza, named after the eminent artist Jorge de Oteiza. It serves an array of traditional dishes such as Beasain black pudding cake with a bowl of beans, San Sebastián-style fish and seafood soup, sea bass with green pepper sauce, oven baked spider crab, and Madrid-style traditional tripe stew. Espazio Oteiza also has unbelievable terraces –which include a cocktail bar– that offer, like the gastronomic restaurant and the hotel rooms, an unrivaled view of the sea. Blue sea, intense sea, endless sea.
