The trajectory of Basque artist Víctor Goikoetxea continues to be unstoppable, with the undertaking of numerous large-scale projects both locally and internationally. His ability to work in a variety of disciplines and languages has opened the doors of institutions, art fairs, and top-notch companies.
After having completed all the finishes on the walls of the Dior boutique in Guadalajara, Mexico, said French maison commissioned him to do the same for the next store that the brand will open in Madrid. Goikoetxea’s approach revolves around using the walls as if they were a colossal canvas, applying natural lime stucco along with pearlescent paint, creating abstract shapes.
In the Basque Country, he has just presented a sculpture that has been installed in front of the Santurtzi Tower House Palace paying homage to the trade of local female fishmongers. It consists of a figure made of aluminum that embodies a life-size fishmonger with her cart. Likewise, the City Council of Hernani commissioned him with the detailed restoration of its great hall. This is a stately hall from 1889 in French Neoclassical style that the artist will restore with the support of architect Xabier Barrutieta and using techniques such as trompe-l’oeil, or tempera painting.
In Switzerland, he recently unveiled a 1:1 scale figurative piece commissioned by L’école de Meinier of Geneva. It is a hyper-realistic painting that, due to its location on an exterior wall, becomes a trompe-l’oeil.
In terms of exhibitions, Goikoetxea will be present in the coming months in two of the most vibrant metropolises at a cultural level: London and Dubai. For the first time, the artist will have an individual exhibition in a London gallery, where he will put on display his thermoformed sculpture paintings. In addition, he will participate in Art Dubai, the main art fair in the Middle East. His proposal for this great international meeting lies in an installation of enormous dimensions that replicates a fragment of the geopark of the Basque coast, bathed in a velvety pink finish. This piece is a reflection on the impact that the hand of man has on the natural environment, especially on the coast. The installation, created by using a complex electrolysis method, reveals a new language in the artist’s already extensive linguistic universe, never ceasing in his continued experimentation with matter.
